University Preparation, Careers, & EPQ

Preparing Students for Life Beyond Sixth Form

At Wrenmere International Online School, we believe that education should inspire ambition, cultivate independence, and prepare every student for a future filled with opportunity.

Our University Preparation, Careers & EPQ programme has been thoughtfully designed to support students as they explore their aspirations, make informed decisions, and take confident steps towards higher education and their chosen career pathways.

Through personalised mentoring, expert careers guidance, university preparation, and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), we empower students to develop the academic confidence, transferable skills, and intellectual curiosity that enable them to flourish far beyond the classroom.

Personalised University Preparation

Every student's ambitions are unique, and their journey to university should be equally individual. As a UCAS Registered Centre, Wrenmere provides comprehensive guidance throughout every stage of the university application process. From exploring degree options and selecting the right universities to preparing personal statements, academic references, predicted grades, and interview preparation, our experienced Sixth Form team works closely with every student to ensure they submit confident and competitive applications.

Whether applying to Russell Group universities, specialist institutions, or international destinations, we are committed to helping every learner make informed decisions about their future.

Careers Guidance for a Changing World

Preparing students for the future extends beyond university applications. Our personalised careers programme encourages students to explore their interests, strengths, and ambitions while gaining a deeper understanding of the opportunities available across a rapidly evolving global economy.

Through individual guidance, career planning, and conversations about future pathways, students are supported in making informed decisions about university, apprenticeships, professional careers, entrepreneurship, and other exciting opportunities.

By helping learners understand how their education connects to their long-term aspirations, we inspire confidence, purpose, and ambition at every stage.

Wrenmere pupil developing academic research skills through an EPQ

The Extended Project Qualification | EPQ

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) offers students the opportunity to explore a subject that genuinely inspires them while developing the independent learning skills expected within higher education.

Equivalent to half an A Level, the EPQ encourages students to undertake an in-depth project beyond the standard curriculum, allowing them to investigate a topic of personal interest or one closely aligned with their future university or career aspirations. Whether exploring a scientific theory, analysing historical events, creating an original piece of artwork, designing a product, or investigating a contemporary global issue, every project is individually chosen and carefully guided by an experienced supervisor.

Throughout the project, students cultivate the confidence to work independently while developing valuable transferable skills including research, critical analysis, academic writing, time management, project planning, presentation, and reflective evaluation. These skills prepare students exceptionally well for the demands of university study and are highly valued across a wide range of professional careers.

Choosing the Right Project Format

One of the unique strengths of the EPQ is the flexibility it offers. Students may select the format that best reflects their interests, learning style, and future ambitions.

Dissertation

Students produce an independently researched essay of approximately 5,000 words, exploring a carefully chosen research question in significant depth. This option is particularly well suited to students considering subjects such as History, English, Psychology, Law, Politics, Philosophy, or the Social Sciences, where analytical writing and evidence-based argument are central to university study.

Investigation

An investigation enables students to carry out practical or data-driven research before analysing and evaluating their findings. This pathway is ideal for learners with interests in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Geography, Economics, or other STEM-related disciplines, encouraging scientific enquiry and analytical thinking.

Performance

Students plan, prepare, and deliver a live performance or presentation, supported by detailed planning documentation and a written evaluation of the process. This format is particularly suitable for students pursuing Drama, Music, Public Speaking, Education, or other performance-based disciplines, allowing them to demonstrate both practical expertise and reflective learning.

Artefact

The artefact pathway enables students to design, create, or produce an original outcome, accompanied by a reflective report that evaluates the creative process. Artefacts may include artwork, photography portfolios, engineering prototypes, digital media, creative writing, design projects, or other innovative products, making this an excellent choice for students interested in creative and technical subjects.

Why Choose an EPQ?

The EPQ provides far more than an additional qualification. It gives students the opportunity to demonstrate intellectual curiosity, initiative, and independent thinking beyond their A Level studies.

Many students choose to complete an EPQ because it allows them to explore an academic subject in greater depth, investigate an area they are passionate about, or strengthen their preparation for a university course they hope to study. The experience of planning a substantial project, managing deadlines, evaluating evidence, and presenting original conclusions provides an excellent introduction to the style of learning expected within higher education.

Alongside the academic benefits, the EPQ encourages students to become more confident, resilient, and self-directed learners. These qualities are invaluable not only for university applications, but also for future careers where initiative, research, communication, and problem-solving are increasingly sought after.

At Wrenmere, every EPQ is supported through personalised supervision, regular progress meetings, and individual academic guidance, ensuring each student is encouraged to produce work of the highest possible standard while exploring a topic that genuinely reflects their interests and aspirations.
